Selena Quintanilla Series Review

Netflix 'Selena: The Series' 2020 Cast and Real-Life Counterparts

As you may know Netflix has produced a Series based on Selena during her up-rise to fame as the icon she is today. The series itself wasn't very well it didn't emulate the personality and charisma that Selena is known to have, she was very unsure of herself, shy and timid. The wigs from the show were not good either, they weren't blended and didn't really accurately represent the Quintanilla family. The story itself was well-written about the family's background and rise to fame and that it was a long journey to get to where they are today. It was primarily based on they're gigs in the 80's and the transition into the 90's. I did really like Abraham's character in the series, he was more motivational and always push his kids to be better. The humbling experience of playing the Dinos band in restaurant, and making lights out of peach cans. The commitment and strive to want to be successful, the downfall of struggling to come up with successful songs. AB had to worked with Pete on the songs. The show did go in depth more towards the Quintanilla family. It showed that Suzette didn't want to play the drums at first until she realized the impact. But the timeline of the first season was too fast and not explained enough, they made it seem like Selena didn't want to take music seriously and cared more about the fabric store than finish recording a song. There was no chemistry between Selena and Chris, everything seemed rushed.

I was also disappointed with the look of Selena either. Selena is a brown Mexican woman with curves. It is important for little girls and women in general to have someone that they can look up to and has features like them. It is representing the Hispanic Mexican culture. Especially a tejano music icon like Selena is the few latina icons of our generation. Her personality was very bubbly, she was always smiling, laughing and joking it made you feel like she can be your friend. If you watch any of her interviews, you get a glimpse of her character, she was a famous Mexican singer but humble, funny and relatable. She liked sleeping in her bed in her trailer like a typical young woman, and joking about not working out, eating a whole medium pizza by herself and doritos. That's what made her so relatable and why she captured the hearts of millions. She also captured her audience with her passion in music and her love of fashion, any of her looks are memorable. The bustiers, black pants, hoops and red lipstick was her signature look. In general, the look and perfomance of Selena was not very well, Christian Serratos, her persona as the character was dry and she didn't have the same confidence and aura as Selena had. Her dancing was stiff. The script itself was the only good thing about the show, but the actimg, casting, and the pace of the storyline wasn't there. Selena and her fans deserved a vivid performance by a typical Mexican girl that is bubbly like her and has the spirit to tell her story to a generation of fans.
