(The Mandalorian and Cinematic Process)
The Mandalorian is a series on Disney Plus as a part of the Star Wars Lucas film franchise based on a lone gunfighter in a galaxy of the time period of the New Republic. The main protagonist the Mandalorian is a bounty hunter that is associated of a creed of soldiers that wear armor by both men and women as an identity to give protection and stands as a silhouette of character symbolism. The bounty hunters wear the armor as tradition of their cult after early crusades of Jedi after the war between Mandalorian and Jedi. They attain a specific weaponry and fighting style to combat against Jedi Knights. The main protagonists in this series was converted to the creed as a child after his village was conquered during the war, a flashback of his home getting destroyed left him with a dislike towards droids in this case is the IG-11 is a type of droid that is designed to attack humankind. The main protagonist (Mando) is set a mission to attain a 50 year old creature that is experienced, encounters "the child" which is a baby species of Yoda and doesn't reach the extent of full maturity at the age of 100. An estimated 800 years longevity lifespan of training jedi, all of their species is force sensitive. (Yoda's species) So, the child was assigned to the bounty hunter, (Mando) he developed a strong protective bond over he child since there was a resemblance of an absence of parental figures in his upbringing, the creed took him in and saved him. The price was that he wasn't allowed to take off his helmet in front of any other living creature. This theme in Star Wars is emulated the concept of family assimulating with the storytelling of a father figure and his son is exploited throughout the films and franchise.
The real question is how is the technological development to being the story to life made possible. A unique cast and group of creative and intelligent people that are willing to take risks and explore new assets creatively work together to further reach into the depths of George Lucas's vision and platform he created for these characters and take it into another level of storytelling that is relevant to the social norms of society while still implementing those roots of "anthropology" and authenticity, it's still Lucas's vision and creation just being elaborated in an arc that is still part of the franchise but doesn't overlap with the main products which are the films. The creative people that made the reality of the first live action Star Wars television series were (Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa and Taika Waititi) Together these people were able to bind their different levels of experience and backgrounds from the film industry and fans of the franchise to develop a new story.
Dave Filoni understood George's vision towards the authenticity and the bigger picture that the films represented and even worked alongside him during the animation series "The Clone Wars" really implemented that level of experience and the artistic eye that was needed to make the story line and artistry stand out from different platforms of entertainment. Filoni understood that Star Wars was about family and more than the space ships and X-Wings that painted the bigger picture underlying those "anthropology" roots and that it was needed for younger audiences to understand the universal themes of life in these stories.
Jon Favreau was the program enthusiast that made the production possible with his background in other films such as the live actions of "The Lion King" "The Jungle Book" and the Iron Man films and used that knowledge and experience and was able to tinker with technology such as the "virtual production" beyond the green and blue screen and is technology in which you take pictures of locations and are able to project that in film studios as a panoramic experience in which you can envision the set without using your imagination and having too much CGI and mocap dots on actors faces and suits to visualize what you were creating, because you can see exactly what was being put into perspective, made it easier to deliver the performance as an actor or producer. The technology of Industrial Light Magic was improved with adding volume and realism to the technology that made the production successful in achieving an extent of creativity appear real. This was physically possible with Stagecraft (the application of LED walls) the pixels are much more fine and it's a cheaper alternative than more cost effective film technology. The technique of the filming process is "parallax" (the effect whereby the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions) When the camera moves it is interactive towards the environment making the visual more "photo realistic" Technology described as "newly invented" for the young directors to easily make films with a lower reasonable budget, transfer the vision in their mind onto the film platforms. As the cast described as technology that George would have in his garage to make film making more accessible than before, as he imagined when developing the (prequels)
The inspiration for "The Mandalorian" is not so much Star Wars but the sources of entertainment that inspired George Lucas in creating Star Wars such as Samurai and Western films, "lone wolf and cub" concept. The character complexities are inspired from those films. The script is developed then the storyboard artists approve the story, the director view the story through animation temporary dialogue and effects. After the pencil observation the material is then transferred to "Pre-Vis." The scene is an action sequence mock of the sequence of the production. You can the story better and clearer, storytelling better animation process. You can see the mistakes earlier and get a heads up of the final product earlier in editing the material. Planning the material ahead with "pre-vis" (visual effects) and mocap towards specific scenes, build a minimal set and visual environment and motion capturing camera. "Virtual Cinema" camera equipment and camera capture to record actors actions in the virtual environment. The process has to be correct, you can't go back and edit out everything in a sense of good cinema. The prep time was longer of 8 months for an episode than 8-10 days better quality in film making. Develop and put the material together before you execute the ideas. "Samurai Code with Gunslinger concepts was the prime visual.
The authentic concept of puppets was implemented of the series. Baby Yoda and Quill were puppets that brought the live action performance to life with practical effects and puppeteers to make the convergence of old and new art form to seem real. The main focus of the eyes and ears as the most expressive developed the concept of Baby Yoda in the aviator jacket and certain proportions as a baby form of Yoda. The performance is extra magical it is analogous to the magic in Empire Strikes Back when Yoda was being emulated. You shoot the puppet like another actor on set with the mission to being relatable to the audience and captivating their attention and hearts.
Last but not least is the importance of the cast and their performance necessary to make the characters come to life with the overall vision and script. The relationships and chemistry of the cast is essential for a project. The actor's job is to endorse the producers vision emulated in the script and the perspective of the different roles in the story line.(Pedro Pascal) made the main protagonist relatable and human even though he is covered in armor,it's like a shell used for protection against the world. The delivery of emotion and physicality towards the character that is hidden in armor his expressions are not the easiest to defy. Cara Dune portrayed by Giana Carano emulates this character as a female bounty hunter soldier figure that is also a lone wolf traveling different planets that serves as a great friend to the Mandalorian. She is not a typical female character which makes her unique from that characterization of liking adrenaline and combat, it overall makes the character unique.
Overall, this show was a perfect portrayal of a Space Western setting in the essence of illustrating a "gunslinger" that is a "lone wolf" with this "cub" in a galaxy with the sidekick of the female combat character which makes this picture production unique, binding George Lucas's vision and expanding the Star Wars universe.
